Global Climate Finance
&
Risk Conference
Virtual, October 25, 2024

I am organizing a Virtual Conference on “Global Climate Finance at Risk” on Friday October 25, 2024, together with Prof. Dean Andrew Karolyi (Cornell University) and Dasol Kim (U.S. Treasury, Office of Financial Research). If you are interested in attending, please register below.

This one-day conference will feature a blend of policy discussions and scholarly paper presentations on climate finance and risk issues. Our primary focus will be on scaling climate finance to decarbonize the global economy. This is an especially salient topic in the context of globally rising emissions and a fast depleting carbon budget, and in the context of COP29 which will focus on setting a “New Quantified Goal” for Climate Finance. The conference sessions will cover the role of governments, investors, development institutions and macroprudential policymakers in unlocking climate finance at scale.

The conference brings together the world’s leading voices on this topic. Keynote speakers at our conference include the Janet Yellen (U.S. Treasury Secretary) and Mark Carney (GFANZ), as well as top climate scientist, Professor Johan Rockström (Potsdam Institute), Bob Litterman (Kepos Capital), and Eric Usher (UNEP-FI).

Cornell SC Johnson College of Business Offers New Climate Finance Course

Last fall, the Cornell SC Johnson College of Business launched a new course, Climate Finance, for undergraduates in the Charles H. Dyson School of Applied Economics and Management. This spring, a graduate-level version of the course is underway for MBA and other master’s degree students at the Samuel Curtis Johnson Graduate School of Management. Alissa M. Kleinnijenhuis, Visiting Assistant Professor of Finance at the SC Johnson College, developed and taught the inaugural courses. In this Q&A, learn about what motivated her to teach climate finance, why climate finance matters, and what the course is all about.

Solving the wickedest problem

New VoxTalks Climate Finance Episode. In the brief history of climate finance, Professor Andrew Karolyi has been one of the pioneers, both as an author and a catalyst to encourage other finance experts to become involved. He talks to Alissa M. Kleinnijenhuis and Tim Phillips about what inspired him to take on what he calls “the wickedest of wicked problems”, how he kickstarted research on the topic, and the little-known involvement of King Charles III in the genesis of climate finance.

The Economic Case for Decarbonising the Emerging and Developing Market Economies

On 12 December 2023, I organized an event at EU’s leading economic thinktank, Bruegel, entitled “The Economic Case for Decarbonizing Emerging and Developing Market Economies.”

In this event, chaired by Bruegel Director, Jeromin Zettelmeyer, I presented my co-authored paper on the topic, and we invited experts on climate finance deals to comment on our paper and share their expertise. Abhishek Bhaskar (Climate Investment Funds), Lida Fitts (US Department for the Treasury), and Cao Li (Bao Forum for Asia Academy) insightfully joined us.

In this event we essentially asked the question: What are the economic and cooperative mechanisms for developed countries to assist EMDEs in decarbonisation?

Into Unchartered Realms: How Tipping Points Accelerate Climate Change

On Tuesday 31 October 2020, Professor Tim Lenton, one of the foremost experts on “climate tipping points” and top climate scientist known for his work on “planetary boundaries” came to give a guest lecture in my novel Climate Finance course at Cornell University, offered as part of the Cornell SC Johnson College of Business curriculum.

As finance scholars in the field of climate finance, it is essential to take the latest climate science into account.

Professor Lenton’s work highlights the huge risks posed by climate tipping points for the habitability of this earth. See also his “Global Tipping Points” report published at COP28 in collaboration with the Bezos Foundation.
